It's been a week since the 2026 NFL Draft wrapped up, and the boys have meted out their rankings for all of the first round picks. You might not agree with all of them, but that's kind of part of the fun, isn't it? As always, this is based off of their big boards, positional value, team needs, and the overall vibes that they felt for each of these picks.
This one is easy. #1 QB, meet the team at the top of the draft with one of the biggest needs at that position. Mendoza was a guy we liked coming into the season, and then he went Supernova with Indiana. He's in a great position for the future as well with Kirk Cousins holding down the starting spot as he gets used to the NFL, and the whole coaching staff gets used to the new roster.
We had so much love for Bailey throughout the season, it wasn't hard to make this an "A" pick. Dude is ready to go out of the box, and the Jets are absolutely starved for a player that can bring pressure and has potential to be that true #1 Edge for a team. Double digit sacks are definitely on the table as a rookie
The first mild shocker of the draft given who the Cardinals brought into their RB room in the offseason. There's no denying Love's all-round game, and while we didn't put him above Ashton Jeanty like others did in the pre-draft process, there's a lot to love with his vision, speed and ability to be a threat catching the ball out of the backfield.
It's not that we don't think Tate is good...he's the top WR this year! But...Tennessee...y'all needed SO MUCH on that roster. That said, Cam Ward needs a go-to guy, and everything we've seen from him at OSU says he should fit the bill...but he's also never had to be the #1, and that spotlight is going to heat up in a hurry in Nashville.
This grade is more about putting Reese's potential into perspective. Three years from now he could be one of the best off ball linebackers or edge rushers in the game...but if the Giants were picking him to be a linebacker...why would they take him over Sonny Styles?! They might have overthought this one.
The boys were split on the grade for this. Delane is the top CB, but was he worth the trade up? Dan thinks so, JP...well, you see the grade. KC put themselves in this position, and while Delane should mature into a shutdown corner at this level, the way the Chiefs refuse to give a second contract to a CB has got to bite them at some point, right?
The top guy on both boy's boards lasts to the 7th pick. This one was easy. Styles is a day one, three down starter. Because of how he was used last season at OSU, people forget he has some pass rushing chops to go with his end to end range and top notch football mind. He's a green dot guy for a decade in the NFL.
This pick...might not age well. Or he's going to be the best WR in the draft. If he stays on the field. Which he kind of hasn't done all that well throughout his career. The talent is undeniable, but c'mon Saints! We joked about this throughout the year about how funny it would be if they paired the most injury riddled WR with another talented player in Chris Olave, who has been no stranger to missing time himself. Hey, go big or go on IR right?
The #1 on the boards and in our hearts AND you get a pick for your trouble? Yes please. Dare we say the Cleveland Browns made a good pick?! Fano might not have an "ideal" tackle frame, but the skill is off the charts. We talked about him being the best lineman in the draft across the board. Dan is happy he's getting a chance to prove himself on the left side.
The Giants came back with their second pick in the first round and made a good choice for the future of their O-Line as Mauigoa should slot in just fine at guard, though Dan definitely sees some right tackle potential, and anything that gets Elumeanor out of the starting liineup is a plus for the G men
the only reason this isn't an A is because of the positional value. (for JP. Dan had this as an A+, and he felt dirty giving so many buckeyes such good grades) Caleb Downs is a day one starter for the back end of the cowboys defense. He was going to make any team better, even a team that probably had a more glaring need long term at Edge.
One of the bigger wild cards in this first round. To begin with, the fish need help all over the board. Proctor has the potential to help at any of four spots on the line...aaaaand he could be washed out of the league by the end of his first contract. Dude had a great year analytically, but as we said throughout the year, he's the most athletic and yet least technically sound guy at the top of this line class.
Well, JP called it. We have receipts. And the Rams have a shiny new toy to keep in the garage for at least a year if all goes well. While Simpson might not be ready to start day one, he landed in the perfect spot. He sat at Alabama and turned in a great season this past year. Now he gets to sit behind one of the best to do it in the game right now and learn for a season or two. So this is what LA does when they actually have a first round pick.
We mocked this, just like everyone else in the world, several times throughout the year. It just makes too much sense for him to slot in on a line that suffered with their guard play last season. Ioane is a road grader and a technician. One of the absolute surest things in this draft.
Ok, we were dogging on Bain all season, so it should come as no surprise that we didn't give this a good grade. Bain is the closest thing we've seen to a football T-Rex with those arms, and that kept him out of our first round picture. That said, dude has a motor and desire that's hard to coach. He'll likely be a solid piece on the Buc's line, but the first round is a bit too rich for us.
Another pick that a lot of people mocked throughout the year, and its just too good of a fit for a team that's still trying to build out a receiving room. Sadiq is a better blocker than people might think, and his receiving ability is well chronicled. If he was two inches taller he could have been a top 10 pick
This worked out so well for Detroit. They had a glaring need at right tackle, and they grabbed an iron man that was mad when he missed a practice for a surgery in college. That's a Lion all day. He has good technique, a mean streak and an attitude to work. Looking forward to the chest bumps with Campbell
It's one of those moments where as an objective draft observer...oooof. As a Lions fan...HA! For real though, Banks has a skiy high ceiling, and foot issues that willl likely keep him from reaching it. Points to him for coming back to play at the end of the season, but then he went and got hurt again. Yikes.
High ceiling guy that gets to stay close to his college dawgs. Probably the most athletically gifted tackle this side of Proctor, but with only one year of starting under his belt, Carolina is right to bring him along slowly....even if they have some glaring needs on their line. So, next year?
He was on the phone with the Steelers when the Eagles called, so suffice to say there was some interest! That said, JP had to ding Philly for trading up, even if it was pretty obvious they had to if they wanted him. This telegraphs the likely A.J. Brown trade. While they're definitely not one for one, Lemon is a great route runner with sure (if small) hands and will be a day one starter in the slot.
Fun pivot for Pittsburgh, which makes us think they have more concerns with BroJo's neck injury than maybe we'd like to admit. Max is hyper talented, but young and raw, which means the ceiling is way out there, and the Steelers clearly believe in it. No clue if they view him as a starter right away, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him take the NFL red shirt this season.
Another guy that has his place in this draft, but boy these guys didn't want him in the first round. Motor for days, tons of production. But...dude is what, 25 and a half? as a rookie? Yikes. He is going to step in day one and help LA's pass rush, however, how likely is he to see a second contract? He's going to be 31 at the start of the next one. The Chargers have a lot of faith in a guy that looked great against players five years younger than him.
Another crazy talented guy that went a around early for Dan. He showed tons of quickness and speed for UCF last season, but not as much production as some of the other guys in this class. Dallas is betting on that upside in their 3-4 style, and he'll have the opportunity to learn behind Eze and Rashawn Gary. It's a great spot for Lawrence.
Probably one of the more divisive grades of the first round between the guys. Dan acknowledges the talent, and also acknowledges the drops. And who else was on the board at that position (including who they picked up later in the draft!) JP though recognizes how much help the Browns needed at that position group. Conception will be ready to go out of the box for Cleveland. Let's see if he can keep his eye (and hands!) on the ball.
This was so much fun in real time. JP's #2 guy going to his #2 least favorite team. And Dan's #2 team! Loved it. Thieneman is so ready to go and will be a day one starter for the Bears. He's fast, strong, he reads & reacts at a high level. Tackle machine. Couple of picks. Love him, especially at the 25th pick!
Houston's team needs were first, second, and third on the offensive line. This was necessary...but was it the rght guy? Rutledge plays hard and nasty and brings an edge that is needed in Houston. But Caleb Lomu is right there guys! Keylan is going to find a home somewhere on the inside of the Texans' line, because, how could he not?!
Ok, just kidding. THIS was the biggest variance. Miami desprately needs CB help, Dan loved Johnson in the pre-draft process. JP just thought this was too high. Dude is a lock down corner with size. Only knock is how much stock you put in his level of competition. He's going to be starting day one for Miami, mainly because of lack of any real other options outside of the amazingly named Storm Duck!
Long term starter that can step in and start right away for a team that has one of our least favorite rookies at tackle? Yes please. Lomu might have been the lesser of the two tackles from Utah, but he's a solid technician with good range and wingspan. Whether or not he does crack the lineup right away, he's going to be in their long term plans with Morgan Moses getting up there, and Will Campbell better off on the inside as far as these guys think
Another split, because Dan just can't quit those Clemson D Line boys. Woods had a monster junior season, but just didn't have the numbers as a senior. Physically gifted, but also didn't test well, and yet the tape he put down two seasons ago can't be ignored. This pick is about the future for KC, and Woods is going to get to learn from Chris Jones, and there's no better.
The Jets go back to the receiver well for their third pick of the first round, and they grabbed a great fit for their setup. Cooper can come in and compete for the third WR spot right away, but also not have the pressure to carry the offense, as he might sliot in as the fourth option behind Sadiq as well. He found the end zone a lot for Indiana last year, and the Jets are hoping he can do the same from the slot.
Remember that whole thing about needing help with other parts of the roster? Yea, this isn't how to do it. The Titans need help on the edge, no doubt. And Faulk is certainly physically gifted, but two sacks? less than 1% on the poop ratio? This pick is all about upside, and it's wishful thinking at best. Tennessee certainly isn't going to be contending right away, so Faulk will have time to develop. Let's see if this staff can figure it out
While there is a bit of a gap there betwen the boys, that mostly comes down to Dan acknowledging that Seattle has a glaring need at RB, and JP not caring too much. Price showed a lot of flashes last year, stayed over the 6 YPC mark and found hte end zone lpenty. but he did it as a backup to Love, and no one has any clue about his ability to be the lead back. At least he still has plenty of tread on the tires.
One thing we always remind you is it takes THREE YEARS to properly vet a draft class, much less first rounders. But that's not how this world works, is it? We look forward to dissecting how right and how very wrong we are on some of these picks in, oh, say, september? HA!
